Brochure Focal Point Female Genital Mutilation 

The brochure ‘Focal point meisjesbesnijdenis’ (Dutch only) provides information about the Focal Point Female Genital Mutilation and how it can assist you. The brochure includes general information about FGM, the reasons why it is practiced, and the consequences for girls and women who are circumcised or not circumcised. A number of key issues have been formulated in case you as a professional come into contact with cases of FGM.

Consultation hours for women

Easily accessible consultations are available for women who have undergone circumcision and are in need of medical care. These consultation hours have been launched in the following cities: 

  • Amsterdam

    In Amsterdam, women can visit a consultation hour on Mondays (even weeks) or Thursdays (odd weeks) between 13.00-16.00. The consultation hour is run by a specialized nurse and located at the gynaecology department of the OLVG-West Hospital.   • Assen

    Sense North Holland organizes the easy accessible consultation hours in the provinces of Drenthe, Friesland and Groningen. In Assen you can consult specialized nurses Gerrie Aalfs and Tjikkie Lodewijk. To make an appointment you can call 0900-7367366 or send an email to vgv@sensenoord.nl.

  • Den Bosch

    In the region Hart voor Brabant, women can make an appointment with one of the two specialized nurses at the Sense clinic (088-3686673), locations Den Bosch and Tilburg.

  • The Hague

    (The Hague): The Haga Hospital offers consultation hours at the outpatient gynaecology clinic at the Leyweg location, led by specialized nurse Marisa Abdulgani. The consultation hours are on Mondays, from 9:00 to 12:30 for an intake and until 17.00 with an appointment.   • Groningen

    Sense North Holland organizes the easy accessible consultation hours in the provinces of Drenthe, Friesland and Groningen. In Groningen you can consult specialized doctor Sjors Oosterbaan. To make an appointment you can call 0900-7367366 or send an email to sensetelefoon@csgnn.nl.

  • Leeuwarden

    Sense North Holland organizes the easy accessible consultation hours in the provinces of Drenthe, Friesland and Groningen. In Leeuwarden you can consult specialized doctor Simone Onrust. To make an appointment you can call 0900-7367366 or send an email to sensetelefoon@csgnn.nl.

  • Rotterdam/Rijnmond

    In Rotterdam key persons from the community are trained to answer questions of circumcised women during a ‘living-room meeting’ or home visit. If necessary, the key persons can also accompany women to a health-care provider. They can be reached via 06-52749924.

  • Tilburg

    In the region Hart voor Brabant, women can make an appointment with one of the two specialized nurses at the Sense clinic (0900-3696969), locations Den Bosch and Tilburg.

  • Nijmegen

    In Nijmegen the easy accessible consultation hour is organized by the GGD Gelderland-Zuid. Two specialized nurses and a doctor are available for consultation. To make an appointment, you can contact Sarah Kladakis (06-25754074; skladakis@ggdgelderlandzuid.nl) or Pushpa Hoppener and Helmie van der Meijden (088-1447196).

  • IJsselland region and North & East Gelderland
    (e.g. Apeldoorn, Doetinchem, Winterswijk, Zwolle): In the IJsselland and Gelderland region, it is possible for women to make an appointment in various locations.   • South Limburg region
    The Center for Sexual Health at the GGD South Limburg offers care to women up to 25 years old with questions or complaints regarding sexuality and FGM. These consultation hours are available in Sittard-Geleen, Maastricht and Heerlen.

Zero Tolerance Day FGM

February 6 is the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation. In the Netherlands, Platform 6/2 annually organizes a convention in the Netherlands to bring FGM under the attention and to discuss the ways in which FGM is combatted.

Platform 6/2 is a collaboration between Plan Nederland, Defence for Children – ECPAT, Federation of Somali Associations in the Netherlands (FSAN) and Pharos.
